Where it all began….

Before I start doing how-to posts I thought I’d tell you all my story, since quite a lot of people have asked and you’re all probably super nosy like me. So here we go, my journey….

Sometime in 2011, when I was a young and carefree 21 year old; still living at home without a care in the world, living for the weekend and partying like a pro with the girls, my good friend Jade turned 21. Hi Jade if you’re reading (waving girl emoji)! For her birthday I came up with the fantastic idea of making her a teapot cake(private joke)… see below. Fantastic right? Haha!

I was sooooo proud of myself – it took me all afternoon. And even though it looked all bumpy and amateur, it was my first proper cake I’d made and I loved it! and still do!

After that teapotty triumph, I decided I’d go on a cupcake decorating course that I swiftly purchased off Groupon, and off I went. It was a very basic course but it taught me quite a lot about the basics of using fondant.

I went on to start making cakes and cupcakes as a hobby for friends and family, learning as I went, with plenty of trial and error! I’d post a couple on my Facebook page and gradually friends of friends of friends would ask me to make them a cake and since then I’ve never really stopped.

I will be honest, there has been so many occasions where I’ve wanted to cry, sell all my equipment and stick with my steady office job because my fondant was cracking or the elephant I’d spent an hour on, his trunk snapped off. But with a little patience and a lot of determination I have always carried on and delivered.

So, apart from the one course right at the beginning, I’m proud to say I’m self-taught. I use YouTube tutorials, blogs and inspiration from instagram/pinterest to help me. I feel as though I have at long last found my true vocation, I don’t sit at my desk anymore I want to hit myself round the face with my keyboard and scream ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE?!’ I’m still working 4 days a week and caking on a Friday (and most evenings!) but in March I will be dropping another day caking more and more. It’s taken me the best part of 6 years to get to where I am now, who knows where I’ll be in another 6 years!

If you’re thinking about starting a new hobby or like the thought of cake decorating my advice would be to just start practicing, go on a little course or just bake a cake. I promise it’s not hard. I’m soon going to share my absolute kitchen essentials and a very basic cake recipe with you soon, to get you started. I’ve even got a mini tripod for my phone so I can video myself doing it so you can see how easy it all is.

Thank you for reading, hopefully you haven’t nodded off.

Lot of love, Emma.Hellocake xxx

  1. Hi Emma,
I always think your cakes are fantastic – very pristine! I started out the same as you two years ago … but I still have a way to go! Also struggle with working five days a week and the mess it always makes in my kitchen! But it’s always worth it when I see the finished product.
    Great read 🙂
    Beth xx

  2. Loved reading your first blog. I really admire you… insta can make everything look so easy and like someone has the dream life but then the reality is a huge amount of grit and hard work (which a tiny square photo cannot show). Thanks for sharing looking forward to reading more! ☺️

  3. Isnt it so fun, learning new techniques, and managing to pull off a cake you weren’t quite sure would work? I started a cake decorating course this year, so I also started doing How-to’s on my blog. Cake decorating is awesome! I’m hoping to start my own business this year, hopefully. Although I have to agree with you that sometimes its a pain in the you-know-what! I look forward to reading more from you!
